Introduction to Operations and Supply Chain Management
That levitating Box!
Remember that levitating box in the class. The one that had things going in and going out. We spent the first three sessions trying to understand that box! We came to know that it is called Operations Management and how things went into it, got transformed and came out adding value to whatever went in. We looked at that box from three different lenses (Input-output, pre-service and post-service perspective and SCM perspective) and got some insights through the discussion. Using some examples from pop culture, we understood the role of operations manager and their challenges. We also got a view of historical developments in operations management. We ended the discussion with current challenges in OM and specific discussion about the triple bottom line approach and how companies have moved away from blind pursuit of economic prosperity.

Here are some interesting follow up links connecting the pop culture references that were discussed during the session!

Role of OM in Overall Strategy
We started off discussing the role of operations strategy in the discussion in the achievement of overall corporate objectives. We understood factors influencing choice of competitive dimensions of operations strategy and the complex relationship between these dimensions Eg Quality v/s Cost.
Finally, we looked at the case of The Akshayapatra foundation and understood how the details of their operations strategy. In a very interesting and engaging discussion, we unpacked the key strategic operational choices made by the organization in centralized and decentralized system of operations. We saw how each of these choices are guided by the overarching Vision of TAPF of making sure no child is deprived of education for lack of food. Further, we also saw how over time, the capabilities developed by TAPF could further the vision of the organization. We ended with a discussion of the Terry Hill's generic strategy framework and how to use it. |
And you thought subway was all about mass customization!!!!
Think about it! Does this really qualify as a change in operation's strategy? Lets test if anybody is actually going through this content!!! Bring this issue up in class...and I'll be very impressed...

Strategic Capacity Management
- Kia ramped up its production to full capacity only in 2022. Why would they build capacity and not use it for 4 years since inception!!
- Why is ITC demerging its Hotel business that has 11600 keys?
- Why is it so difficult create a new competitor in the cab aggregator market led by Uber and Ola?
Strategic decisions on capacity play an important role in determining the competitive advantage of an organization.
We understood the nuances of capacity measurement along with two tools of used in capacity management, Breakeven Analysis and Decision Trees. We ended the discussion on Shouldice Hospital and their capacity decisions.

Process Selection and Facility Design
Standard product ke liye facility layout chahiye, aa jao, dikhadunga...

Custom product ke liye facility layout chahiye, aa jaio dikhadunga...
Remember those three ropes hanging in the classroom!
Process....Layout....Product In this module, we understood how products characteristics determine the process choice and how process choice determines the physical layout of the facility in which you are undertaking operations. We looked at the Donner case and how misalignment between these three aspects could lead to business failure!

Process Design, Analysis and Resource Utilization
We went through the process of learning about process design, how to identify bottlenecks and improve process throughput and productivity. Through the Kristen cookies case, we baked enough cookies to last an entire month I suppose!!
Understanding of how processes work is essential knowledge for managers. This helps managers build efficient and effective business processes. From now on, while consuming any product, its good to ponder how it was made. And while consuming services, try observing how the process could be improved. Passing on "how its made" videos for your consumption! |

Supply Planning and Inventory Management
We started off with the key purposes of holding inventory, the different inventory classifications and examined the the basic EOQ model.
Uncertainty is the way of life. Without uncertainty life has no color, no meaning, no fun!
So in this session, we started our discussion on how to deal with demand uncertainty while making inventory decisions. Managing the average will make you an average manager! The core lesson of the session is not to rely on expected (average) demand but on your assessment of cost of doing too much and cost of doing too little!
Here are some little videos of how you could use some learning from inventory management in your household ops!
